A full-time fixed term research /PhD post to study visual and haptic (touch) perception is available as part of the EU-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network: “DyViTo”. The applicant will join Professor Wendy Adams’ lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Southampton (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/psychology/about/staff/wendya.page).

The DyViTo network (https://dyvito.wordpress.com) is a research and training consortium that brings together nine academic and four industrial partners and two art galleries from across Europe. We study multisensory, interactive perception and apply our knowledge to improved rendering of complex materials in dynamic environments. The network provides outstanding inter-disciplinary training opportunities through hands-on research projects, international lab exchanges, industrial secondments and specialist workshops and conferences. Early career researchers are generously funded with many opportunities for travel and networking.

The Department of Psychology at Southampton hosts the Centre for Vision and Cognition. Facilities include set-ups for studies on visual and touch perception including a virtual reality environment, visual-haptic presentation (Phantom force-feedback, oculus touch), stereoscopic presentation, eye tracking, computational modeling (super-computing), brain imaging (fMRI) and EEG.

The successful applicant will work on the perception of material properties (e.g. glossiness, stiffness, friction, weight) from vision and touch.  The work will combine psychophysical studies with computational modeling. The applicant will be based in Southampton, but make extended visits to partners in the consortium, including Ulm, Germany. If the post-holder registers for a PhD, they will not be required to pay tuition fees and a PhD stipend will be provided to support the post-holder for the remainder of the 3-year PhD period.
