Salary:   £31,866 - per annum
Full Time Fixed Term (until 01/03/2022)

You will join our team in the Astronautics Group to work on the development of a novel propulsion system for spacecraft that can use the same propellant for chemical as well as electric propulsion. The project, in collaboration with University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, will work to develop an electrospray thruster and chemical propulsion system that can utilise the same propellant. Work at Southampton will focus on the development of an electrospray thruster, including its design (based upon our previous work), and the experimental testing of the thruster. Some work will also be completed on the experimental testing of a chemical thruster.

It is essential you have a PhD in aerospace engineering along with experience of experimental testing ion thrusters within large vacuum chamber facilities.  Experience of electrospray thrusters or closely related technology and a strong track record of high-quality journal publications is advantageous.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
