You will join the research group of Prof Malcolm H Levitt. The project involves the study of long-lived nuclear spin states. You will be responsible for design and implementation of novel NMR experiments employing long-lived nuclear spin states along with interpreting the data in terms of nuclear spin dynamical theories, and for preparing results for publication. You will have the opportunity to develop your CPD by spending a small fraction of the time helping supervising student research.
You must have a PhD in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field or equivalent professional qualifications and experience. In addition, you will have practical experience of advanced magnetic resonance experiments along with experience in the application of spin dynamical theory to the design, or the understanding of, magnetic resonance experiments . Experience of designing and constructing magnetic resonance equipment as well as experience of magnetic resonance pulse programming would be beneficial.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
You will join the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well-equipped NMR facility including one 700MHz, three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, biomolecular NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.
Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in Chemistry. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic, LGBT and disabled applicants to apply for this position. In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science we were awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award in 2014 a and a second Silver award in 2017.
