Fluid dynamics modelling of optical fibre drawing
Applicants are invited for a Research Fellow position in the area of fluid dynamics modelling related to the fabrication of microstructured optical fibres. The project will involve the development of models to study the surface tension driven capillary instability that may occur during the fabrication process of air-glass optical fibres containing ultra-thin glass membranes. It will also involve the numerical study of steady-state solutions of the drawing process of glass fibres with multiple holes and the theoretical investigation of mechanisms leading to fibre breaks. The project will be run as a collaboration between the Optoelectronics Research Centre and the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and will be strongly linked to ongoing fabrication activities.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics/Engineering/Maths or equivalent and a strong background in fluid dynamics and numerical modelling. Relevant experience at post-graduate/post-doctoral level in capillary instability problems or glass fibre drawing modelling would be desirable. A strong mathematical background and excellent programming skills are necessary. The applicants are expected to work as part of a cohesive team, to interact with experimentalists and fibre fabricators and to contribute to the dissemination of high quality research results.
The appointment is for a 2-year period with a tentative start date around April 2013.
