Research Fellow in Development of Wide Band Optical Amplifiers

Fibre & Systems Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £30,395 to £37,345 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term (for 1 year)
Closing Date:  Sunday 09 December 2018
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  1077018PN

You will join our team in the field of optical fibre amplifiers to work on the investigation and development of wide band optical amplifiers (Raman or rare earth doped) for telecom applications. The research looks to double the number of wavelengths that can be simultaneously used for optical data transmission and hence to substantially scale the data carrying capacity of communication networks.

This industrially supported project is a collaboration between the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and a leading global telecommunications equipment supplier, depending on funding. You will be joining a large and successful team within our world-leading photonics research centre at the University of Southampton, UK and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in photonics, preferably in optical fibre amplifiers and lasers, nonlinear fibre optics and/or optical telecommunications; ideally with experience and knowledge of transmission system development (with both knowledge of optical and electronic aspects). Experience of systems modelling and amplifier/laser characterisation would both also be highly desirable.

You must also have a background in laboratory experimentation with proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data. You must also hold, a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
