John Hansard Gallery – part of the University of Southampton – is a leading contemporary art gallery which plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region. Established in 1979, we are one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. In 2018, the Gallery relocated from the University’s Highfield Campus to our purpose-built home in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. This move has tripled our exhibition spaces and active learning opportunities, enabling greater impact in terms of artists’ production and reaching new and diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

We are looking to appoint one part time Gallery Assistants to join our Front of House team. The successful applicant will make an essential contribution to the realisation of our acclaimed programme of contemporary art exhibitions, events, education and outreach activity. The role is for 12 hours per week and currently this is spread over 2 days including alternate Saturdays. A flexible approach will be required as normal working hours will include weekends, with the opportunity of additional overtime in evenings, Sundays and occasionally extra weekdays.

Our Gallery Assistants are expected to deliver the highest standard of customer care, providing a friendly and professional welcome to JHG. Using their art knowledge, they will add depth to the experience of visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Acting as a key visitor-facing members of the JHG team, the Gallery Assistants support the Duty Manager in the day-to-day management and security of the building, ensuring visitor safety by complying with Health & Safety and emergency evacuation procedures. They also undertake administrative and money-handling duties for the Gallery Shop, help in gathering audience feedback and visitor statistics, support access initiatives, and provide occasional set up and invigilation for out of hours events.
