Project description: 

We have the opportunity for a PhD student to join the Pulmonary Immunology Group under the supervision of Dr Karl Staples, 

Dr C. Mirella Spalluto and Prof Tom Wilkinson. This group has a long-standing interest in the immunology of the respiratory tract with a specific focus on the response of the human lung to bacterial and viral infections.

The aim of this BBSRC iCASE studentship is to gain a better understanding of lung mucosal immunity, to elucidate how systemic immunity could be predictive of lung immunity, and scrutinize the mucosal compartment for immune responses to bacterial infections.  As this is an iCASE award, in addition to work in Southampton, this research will be complemented by a period of research at the GlaxoSmithKline campus in Siena, Italy.

The successful candidate is likely to have the following qualifications:

  • A 1st or 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline and/or second degree with a related Masters

Only UK/EU students are eligible to apply.  Subject to eligibility, the studentship will be paid in line with the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) recommended maintenance stipend plus UK fees.
