Applications are invited for the post of Research Fellow in Acoustics at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. The successful candidate will investigate the interdependencies between biological communities, their activities, and the sediment environment in determining the acoustic properties of the shelf seafloor using collected samples and hypothesis-led laboratory experiments. Under the direction of Prof. Martin Solan, research will address the significant challenge in characterising the seafloor that relates to the dependency of acoustic reflection and scattering on the source, composition, and stability of the sediment caused by biological processes in order to establish a holistic view of seabed acoustic response. Funded by the Office of Naval Research, the post will involve direct collaboration with the Institute of Sound and Vibration at the University of Southampton (Prof. Tim Leighton and Prof. Paul White) and with Applied Research Laboratories at the University of Texas at Austin (Dr Aaron Gunderson and Dr. Marcia Isakson). The successful candidate will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification, in physics or related discipline and have a detailed understanding and knowledge of acoustic propagation and reflection in aquatic environments.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
