Research Fellow in Electronics and Electrical Engineering

We are looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC funded project on advanced electronic textiles (E-textiles) at the University of Southampton.

You will be responsible for functional electronic yarn development and integration using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) fabrication methods. You will work with a textile designer and a material scientist to build wearable systems.

You must have a PhD in Electronics, Engineering or relevant areas, or equivalent professional qualifications and experience. The main tasks include electronic yarns (e.g. sensors, microcontrollers) fabrication using the methods developed in our previous funded project and developing interconnection methods between the thin electronic yarn and electronic textiles (e.g. printed tracks on textiles, conductive yarns).

You will be responsible for preparation of scientific publications. You must have outstanding time management, problem solving, and communication skills (oral and written). The post includes collaboration with project partner in industry (e.g. textile manufacturer, medical device company, manufacturing centre).

The post is based in the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems Research Group (SEMS, in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). SEMS is a world-leading research group for electronic textiles with a long track record of delivering research/innovation projects funded by EPSRC, MRC, EU H2020, EU FP7, Dstl, and Innovate UK.

This is a full time fixed term position for 12 months.

The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
