ESRC Centre for Population Change

The Centre for Population Change at the University of Southampton is looking to recruit a talented researcher with an interest in migrants’ social rights. The project will use quantitative methods in order to investigate the situation today of retired migrants from the first post-war wave of intra-EU migration, comparing those who stayed in their host country with those who returned. This will be done primarily on the basis of data obtained from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Individuals from seven destination countries will be chosen, focusing again on migration from poor to rich EU countries.

Your prime responsibility will be to work with the SHARE data set and to analyse the data according to the criteria developed in team discussions. You will also be contributing to a final workshop to which country experts from ten EU countries will contribute.

The successful applicant will work for 10 months 0.5 fte or equivalent, under the direction of Dr. Paul Bridgen and Professor Traute Meyer.

You will have a PhD qualification or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a social science discipline. You will also have highly developed skills in quantitative data analysis and the ability to communicate your approach well to outsiders. Knowledge of the SHARE data set is essential. A research interest in EU migration is desirable.

Applications for a Research Fellow position will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The position is tenable from 1st September 2019.
