“TransEnergy – Road 2 Rail Energy Exchange (R2REE)”

Funded by EPSRC there are two posts available as part of an innovative technical and socio-economic research collaboration to provide energy buffering services to rail transport systems and electric vehicles. It will enable a step change reduction in road and rail energy demand with attractive options to support adoption.

This Research Council funded consortium, entitled ‘TransEnergy – Road 2 Rail Energy Exchange (R2REE)’, is led by the University of Sheffield and includes the Universities of Leeds and Southampton as partners.

The project is to demonstrate the large increase in energy efficiency which can be made by incorporation of line-side energy storage, and integrated road to rail (R2R) energy storage on the rail transport network. The project will also develop a demonstrator system around two case study applications. The University of Southampton is engaged as a project partner to develop the communications, control and interfacing needed to effectively utilise EVs as an aggregated energy store in rail transport power supplies. 

The technical approach for this project is to explore the use of the EVs within the station car park as an aggregated regenerative braking energy recovery system, and investigation of how such a feature can be enabled via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy storage control is envisaged as central to deployment of R2R.

The candidates for this post will take a day-to-day lead on delivering against the key research challenges of developing such a novel energy storage system:

  • Determining the anticipated patterns of energy and power demand during trains entering/leaving the station, including simulating such activity.
  • Ability to understand and compare candidate energy stores for use within such an integrated propulsion system, including possible end-of-life EV battery use.
  • Design, simulate, build and test appropriate power electronic converters/interfaces required to enable the R2REE concept, including appropriate software control.
  • Develop, simulate and test the energy management algorithms required for such a distributed, yet aggregated system.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in energy storage, power electronics or electric rail systems. It would be advantageous if you have an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or other Engineering/Maths related discipline. You will have a detailed understanding and knowledge of power electronics, hardware, software and control, including both simulation and hardware implementation, is essential. As a consortium project, you will be required to liaise with other relevant partners regarding aspects of this work and plan and manage consortium demonstration activities as well as local prototypes. There will be a requirement to travel to present at project meetings and workshops in the UK, national and international conferences, and assist with the production of project report and management documentation. 

These posts are full time fixed term for 12 months and available now.
