Applications are invited for a full time fixed term Research Fellow position at the University of Southampton until 30/06/2021.This multidisciplinary project aims to develop a generation of hybrid nano-electro-mechanical system (NEMS) for applications in smart nanophotonic devices, re-configurable metamaterials and optical sensors that will feature reliable, dynamically adaptable behaviour and field-programmable functions. Our approach is based on coupling NEMS with elastic continuum of thermotropic liquid crystals on the nanoscale and exploiting the latter as a functional component of the resulting novel hybrids. You will join an established and dynamic multidisciplinary research team connecting the Optoelectronics Research Centre, one of the world’s leading photonics institutes, with the Schools of Physics & Astronomy and Engineering. You will have the opportunity to work in the University of Southampton’s £120M state-of-the-art cleanroom complex, one of Europe’s most advanced micro- and nanofabrication facilities (http://www.zeplerinstitute.ac.uk/facilities/).

You must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Physics or Materials Science along with hands-on experience in cleanroom fabrications (ideally within the use of focused ion beam milling). Experience of modelling, designing and characterisation of NEMS or NEMS-based metamatersials/plasmonic devices is highly desirable as is interdisciplinary research experience in functional materials and/or opto-mechanics.  A track record in publishing peer-reviewed international journal papers would be advantageous.  You will demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Please send informal enquires with a CV to Dr. Vassili Fedotov, (vaf@orc.soton.ac.uk).
