We are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton to work within a group aiming to understand the effects of airborne particulate matter components on the respiratory epithelium, and how this might drive pulmonary fibrosis. The research will be led by Dr Matthew Loxham, (BBSRC Future Leader/NIHR Southampton BRC Senior Research Fellow in Air Pollution Toxicology) with Dr Mark Jones (Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine) and Prof Donna Davies (Professor of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology). 

Working as part of a dynamic translational research team consisting of basic and clinical scientists, the successful candidate will be based in the Brooke Laboratory at University Hospital Southampton. The role will involve cell culture (including primary cells), cell-particle exposure experiments, analysis of cell responses by molecular and cellular techniques including ELISA, RT-qPCR, and reporter assays, and manipulation of cells by pharmacological and gene knock-out/knock-in techniques. There may also be a requirement for some work in collaborators’ laboratories at other University campuses within Southampton.

For this position, you must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in cell and molecular biology. Experience of cell culture and at least some of the techniques listed above is essential, while experience in at least one of the following areas of lung cell biology: particle toxicology (especially relating to metals), and redox biology is desirable.

The ideal candidate will be able to adapt to working with a variety of techniques across different laboratories, working efficiently and diligently, with a strong work ethic and able to use their own initiative.  They will be team-oriented, with excellent organisational skills, and reliable.  The successful applicant must have excellent spoken and written English communication skills.

This is a full time fixed term role for 24 months.

The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
