Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory (TDHVL) is an active centre for research into dielectric materials and insulation systems, as well as high voltage and related phenomena. Our state-of-the-art facilities offer capability unique within the UK, and are also used for commercial testing, supported by a specialist engineering team.

You will become an essential part of the team responsible for delivering high voltage testing programmes for a wide range of external customers, with a particular responsibility for maintaining our facilities and equipment and ensuring that they are fit for purpose. We conduct tests against well defined international standards, but our clients often come to us with challenging, non-standard requirements which may require the design of new test rigs.

This is a busy and varied role which involves working on multiple simultaneous projects. The TDHVL Technician is responsible for providing technical support to a range of different project activities; although primarily involving high voltage electrical testing, a number of our test rigs also involve mechanical systems. The TDHVL Technician reports directly to the TDHVL Laboratory Manager, contributing to the effective running of a multi-disciplinary facility with a wide range of different equipment. The laboratory is certified to ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 (see for details), and this role will support the laboratory in maintaining its certification.

To be successful in your new role you will have a skill level equivalent to a minimum of HNC/NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Electrical Engineering (or a directly related discipline) and have previous experience of working safely within an electrical environment. Although a working knowledge of high voltage equipment is desirable, our experienced team will support you in building your competencies in this area through full equipment specific training.

We are an inclusive team that embraces diversity and the benefits this brings. We are committed to work-life balance and offer a range of great benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 20 days rising to 24 after 4 years plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.

Due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities.

We look forward to receiving your application, however, we welcome visits or telephone discussions prior to application please contact Dr James Pilgrim (, or Mr Neil Palmer (
