The Experimental Human Challenge Group, operating within Clinical & Experimental Sciences at the University of Southampton is offering an exciting opportunity to join their team as a Research Technician.  The role will be to provide technical support to the ongoing research activities within the group, with emphasis on the conduct of controlled human infection model experiments (CHIME).  The Experimental Human Challenge Group is currently delivering a first-in-man CHIME using a genetically modified commensal bacterium, Neisseria lactamica and has an ongoing study investigating the immunological consequences of asymptomatic carriage of the bacteria that causes whooping cough, Bordetella pertussis.  The primary role of the post-holder will be to support these studies by providing high quality microbiological expertise.

The successful applicant must have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training.  Possession of a relevant degree in a biological science or equivalent laboratory experience is an advantage.  The ideal applicant must be competent in a wide array of elementary technical tasks, have experience of conducting laboratory-based work to consistently high standards and operate effectively both independently and as part of a team. They will be proficient in the culture of mammalian and bacterial cells, as well as competent in a range of cellular and immunological techniques. Experience of working in a molecular biology environment is essential, whilst experience working in a clinical microbiology environment would be advantageous.  Training in, or experience of working in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) is desirable.

The post is for a full time, fixed term contract for 12 months in the first instance.
