A Research Fellow in Data Analysis is required to join the University of Southampton and contribute towards a project utilising satellite data to make predictions about the destination of ships. This is part of a collaborative project between Polychord, a University of Cambridge spinout,and the University of Southampton’s Maritime Engineering Group.  

The project will take the Polychord tool, originally developed to deal with data that came from the Planck satellite and went from the present day to the Big Bang, spanning ten billion years, and transfer its application to analysis in the marine domain. It is an excellent opportunity to develop practical Machine Learning skills with the support of world-leading experts at the University of Southampton, the University of Cambridge and the Alan Turing Institute, the UKs national institute for AI and data science.

The Research Fellow in Data Analysis will be required undertake the following:

  • Development of the polychord methodology for use in predicting arrival times for ships.
  • Lead the project management over a 6 month period, presenting progress at weekly meetings.
  • Writing and editing of reports.
  • Participation in impact and public engagement activities.

The successful Research Fellow in Data Analysis will have the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Engineering, Computer Science, Science or Mathematics.
  • Strong interest in developing Machine Learning skills.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, comfortable talking with colleagues, stakeholders and potential customers.
  • An interest in the commercial impact of relevant research.

Some experience using nested sampling is desirable but not essential.
