Research Fellow on the ESRC-GCRF funded project ‘Redressing Gendered Health Inequalities of Displaced Women and Girls in contexts of Protracted Crisis in Central and South America (ReGHID)’

An excellent opportunity exists for a Research Fellow position based in the Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton. This is part of an ESRC GCRF-funded research project with the University of York (UK), FLACSO/Honduras, University of Maranhao (Brazil), Fiocruz (Brazil) and Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) that will analyse development-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health needs and rights of migrant women and adolescent girls displaced from Central America to Mexico and from Venezuela to Brazil and Colombia. The project team is led by Professor Pia Riggirozzi (Department of Politics and International Relations, Southampton).

The Research Fellow will be part of a team that will develop new quantitative and qualitative empirical evidence on the impact of displacement on the SRH needs of women and adolescent girls in Central America and Venezuela; co-produce research with non-governmental and civil society organisations working with displaced women and adolescent girls to uncover the lived experiences of their right to health in relation to SRH, and analyse governmental and non-governmental responses in view of the Sustainable Development Goals.  

Specifically, the Research Fellow will be based at the University of Southampton and will (i) participate in the design, implementation and analysis of a quantitative survey on aspects of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of female migrants from Central America who have returned to El Salvador; (ii) conduct secondary analyses of existing data on the SRH needs of women and girl migrants, using such datasets as MICS, DHS and other local surveys across the region; (iii) liaise and aid the implementation of focus groups and in-depth interviews across Central America; and (iv) conduct research, in English and Spanish, in support of the whole programme’s work packages where necessary. The role is planned to involve fieldwork or travel to Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Brazil, although this will be reviewed based on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Successful candidates will have completed or be near to completing a PhD or equivilent professional qualification in social research methods and haveexpertise in demography, global health, gender, health and migration studies, or other relevant field. The candidate will be fluent in written and spoken Spanish as this is critical to the work.   

The position is fixed-term, tenable for 24 months starting on the 4th January 2021 and by 1st February 2021 at the latest. You will be line-managed by Dr Amos Channon (SSD) but will also report to Professor Pia Riggirozzi (PAIR).
