We are seeking an outstanding individual to join us to work on research about patients with a serious physical condition (for example cancer) and their quality of life and mental health, and how we can best support them. The work will focus on adult patients, as well as children and young people. The role will be situated within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton

As a Research Fellow or Senior Research Assistant, you will be responsible for leading the planning, coordination and delivery of high-quality research, with the support of Professor Anne-Sophie Darlington. The post holder will be responsible for planning and conducting data collection, analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of findings.

This exciting research focuses on understanding and investigating quality of life for patients with a serious physical condition across the life span (children, adolescents and young adults, and adults). The work will also focus on how we can support patients and how we can improve their mental health, with a focus on resilience. Part of the work will include developing and refining questionnaires to assess quality of life. It will also include investigating the best ways to support patients, through innovative and engaging interventions. The work will include reviewing the literature, carrying out interviews with patients, working with children and young people to understand their priorities, as well as with parents to understand their needs. You will be tasked with collecting and analysing data, and managing and coordinating the research, and writing for reports and scientific publications. The work will also include active stakeholder engagement. 

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Health Psychology or a related area, such as health services research, child health, nursing and have:

  • Knowledge and understanding of research on patients with a serious physical condition (desirable)
  • Knowledge and understanding of research with children and young people (desirable)
  • Excellent qualitative  and quantitative research skills
  • Proven ability to organise a range of high-quality research activities to deadline and quality standards
  • Excellent communication and paper writing skills 

You will need to work effectively with members of the research team. You will also need to work effectively with health care professionals in different organisations, and members of the public/service users to develop, deliver and disseminate the work of the research project.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
