Senior Research Fellow

Web & Internet Science

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £34,895 to £35,938
Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date:   Wednesday 23 January 2013
Interview Date:   Monday 04 February 2013
Reference:  190912FP

Applications are invited for a Senior Research Fellow to work on a major new EPSRC-funded collaborative interdisciplinary project (SOCIAM: The Theory and Practice of Social Machines) http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/J017728/1).  The Project’s core objective is to establish the research, methods, tools, networks and collaborations to allow us to understand social machines (computational entities governed by both computational and social processes) in order that they can be designed and deployed by the full range of potential beneficiaries.  The work of the Project is highly integrative and the successful candidate will be expected to take an holistic approach to their research.

The successful candidate will be based in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) Research Group www.wais.ecs.soton.ac.uk , which undertakes interdisciplinary research focusing on the science and technology of the Web and Internet.  The Group’s current activity can be set against four main research ambitions: to examine the Web and Internet and understand their impact on contemporary society, to understand and explore ways that changes to the Web and Internet as an infrastructure have and may further change people’s lives, to develop innovative Web and Internet services and enhancements for the Web and Internet, and to secure the Web and Internet as a medium of continuous social and technological innovation for the indefinite future.

WAIS is one of six research groups within Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton.  ECS is the UK’s leading academic unit integrating computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering.  In the last Research Assessment Exercise (in 2008) Computer Science was ranked joint second in the UK for the quality of its research, with 85 per cent of its research work being rated as either world leading or internationally excellent.

You should possess a PhD in Computer Science or related discipline and have established a strong pedigree in your area (as evidenced by publications in top quality journals and conferences).  In particular, expertise in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: web science and web technologies; linked and open data; privacy, trust and provenance; social computation.

The posts are for 3 years in the first instance.

Interviews will take place on Monday 4 February 2013.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Nigel Shadbolt: nrs@ecs.soton.ac.uk
