Independent Members for Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Board

The University of Southampton is a leading research-intensive University, a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, and one of the top 100 universities worldwide. We deliver excellent educational experience and world-leading research and we are known for successfully commercialising our research through enterprise.  

We are seeking 2 individuals interested in joining our Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Board in a voluntary capacity as an Independent Lay Member.   

Independent lay members are individuals external to the University who are not employed or engaged by us nor a current student. You will be one of 3 independent members.

What is Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise Board?  

Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise Board (KEE Board) is a University committee under the accountability of the Vice-President (Research and Enterprise). Its core responsibilities are to oversee and champion the knowledge exchange, enterprise and innovation agenda across the University, to enhance the University’s strong enterprise ecosystem within a strategic framework. It has responsibility for oversight of the delivery of the KEE Strategic Plan and ensures compatibility with the University’s Strategy with its Triple Helix approach.   

KEE Board focuses on quality and sustainability, whilst enabling enterprise activity to contribute to the diversification of income for the University, maximising the impact of its research outputs and maintain the University’s world leading reputation for knowledge exchange and enterprise (KEE). 

About the role and You

As a lay member you will have the opportunity to provide your perspective and knowledge in order to help the board steer the enterprise and knowledge exchange activities of the university, ensuring that procedures are rigorous, ethical and sustainable.

We welcome expressions of interest from individuals with a track record of success in their own field.

You will have some understanding of UK Universities, the UK Industrial Strategy and innovation ecosystem development, and direct senior experience of at least one of the following perspectives: 

  • industry, large corporate and/or SME 
  • innovation funding, and venture capital investment 
  • public/non-profit/educational organisation 
  • local and regional – civic mission and economic development (Southampton/Hampshire & IOW). 

It would be useful if you also bring experience of managing/promoting: 

  • Diversity & Inclusion 
  • Fundraising 
  • Governance, Regulatory compliance, legal & risk 
  • Sustainability  

The board meet five times a year with an additional a strategic away day. The meetings are typically hybrid although at least one is held in person and are 2-3hrs duration plus preparation time.    

This is a voluntary role, and in return for your commitment and contribution, you will benefit from being part of a successful and ambitious University seeking to maximise opportunities for its community. You will also have the opportunity to build professional networks, and further build your non-executive profile and impact.

Independent Lay Members are appointed for an initial term of three years, renewable up to a maximum of three terms (total 9 years max).
