The Faculty of Engineering and Environment at the University of Southampton is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a research position in computational turbulent reacting flows.
The research will involve direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulations focussing on the turbulent mixing occurring in pulsed fuel jets. The research objective is to develop modelling for direct injection combustion systems.
You will be responsible for development of modelling capabilities, demonstration of these capabilities in a series of test cases using cutting edge super-computing resources, and analysis of the test cases to expose the fundamentals of the phenomena involved. You will also contribute to supervision of a PhD student working on the project.
Expertise required for this appointment includes: an extremely strong understanding of turbulent flow or turbulent combustion; very strong and demonstrated experience of code development and high performance computing; strong written and oral communication skills; a commitment to excellence and an ambition to succeed in a career in research.
You will join the Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics group. The group has particular expertise in the measurement, simulation and modelling of turbulent flows. There will also be significant interaction with research programmes at Ricardo UK and Rolls-Royce plc in the UK.
The University of Southampton is recognised as one of the UK’s leading research centres in the field of fluid mechanics. The city of Southampton is located in a beautiful area on the south coast of England, one and a half hours travel time from London.
