The Novel and Compound facility Glass part of the Zepler Cleanrooms at the University of Southampton is creating the next generation of advanced materials for optical, photonic and electronic applications.

You will be hosted in the Sustainable Electronic Technologies group in the Electronics and computer science through which the Novel and Compound facilities are managed. The expertise of the team includes the development of chalcogenide and layered materials from two dimensional materials to specialty bulk glasses. Through a friendly collaborative and supportive environment, we aim to provide cutting-edge research with a particular focus on the development of our people.

We are seeking an ambitious candidate to drive the next generation of advanced materials and be part of our team. The focus will be on the production of chalcogenide precursors and glasses using unique processes developed at Southampton. You are self-motivated with excellent problem solving and time management capabilities, plus good communications skills. In the PDRA role you will specialise in Novel and Compound Glass equipment including gloveboxes, tube furnaces, annealing furnaces, Chemical Vapour Deposition, Atomic layer deposition, and a variety of custom and characterisation systems. To operate these effectively you will be given full training and be supported by our team.

In parallel with experimental activities, modelling and simulations will form a significant aspect of your research and therefore desirable skills will include knowledge and expertise with the burgeoning range of AI tools available for materials discovery at the atomistic level to further enhance our capabilities.

Essential skills and experience include a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in physics, chemistry, engineering or materials science. This will be augmented by a strong portfolio of relevant publications and significant experience in advanced materials science and technology. You will also have previously led or supervised other members of a research project.
