Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is a unique internationally recognised centre of excellence bringing together research, innovation, and education communities from universities, research institutes, industry, and governments. Our mission, in partnership business, civic and industrial societies, is to be the world's leading institute for marine and maritime innovation, education, and expertise. We have created a unique cross-disciplinary spectrum covering humanities, natural sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences where knowledge acquisition and application is achieved in a collaborative manner with business, civic and industrial societies in order to reach our common objectives. This expertise has been brought together in the SMMI to create a unique expert community comprising about 1,000 scholars. We are to tackling global challenges relating to the oceans, its life, environment, climate, and coasts and society’s dependence on the sea for food, resources, trade, and well-being.

We seek to appoint an Editor-in-Residence* to work with the academic community to produce articles for public and specialist audiences, linking the world’s major engineering, scientific, safety, security, economic, cultural and societal challenges to the research being undertaken by the SMMI to address these issues.

The SMMI Editor-in-Residence will research, produce, and coordinate the regular distribution of articles in media specialising in the marine, maritime and ocean sectors. Working with researchers from across disciplines the editor will prepare objective commentary and/or articles for global specialist and professional magazines, main stream print and web-based media. Written coverage will be supplemented with the use of social media channels including blogs, tweets, and video-casts.
