Enabling Services provides a wide variety of support for students who have long-term health conditions, mental health problems or specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia).  We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Specialist Practitioner (Dyslexia) to join our team to support the implementation of our bold and innovative Inclusive Learning Strategy and help us to continuously improve the student experience.  Above all, we are looking for a specialist who is enterprising and keen to develop their practice and that of our team in ways that challenge conventional wisdom.

Working closely with the Inclusive Learning Manager and our team of Specialist Practitioners, your main areas of work will include:

  • The delivery of high quality study skills tutorials to support students with specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia) in a flexible way (this may include some evening and weekend working)
  • Developing and delivering our expanding group study workshops to students with specific learning difficulties
  • Establishing and developing support for students in using assistive technology, with the benefit of a newly developed Assistive Technology suite
  • Developing and promoting new initiatives to support students with specific learning difficulties
  • Developing links with the faculties across the University to promote inclusive learning and teaching

The role will combine student-facing work, supporting staff to develop inclusive learning and project work.   You will work closely with our team of Specialist Practitioners and will need to build relationships effectively with a range of internal partners.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • excellent communication skills
  • the ability to engage and motivate students
  • problem solving skills to introduce new ways of working
  • experience of managing a fluctuating workload
  • skills of persuasion and influence

You will be qualified to at least degree level or equivalent with a specialist dyslexia qualification.  Membership of a professional body is essential (i.e. PATOSS, ADSHE, BDA).  It is not essential to have a background in Higher Education, although the ability to transfer and adapt your skills to a new environment is key.  Proven work experience in a related area would be desirable, as would a working knowledge of assistive technology.

Please note, being able to work flexibly is a requirement.  Enabling Services would like to develop its offer by being able to support students in the evenings and at weekends, as well as during the core hours of 8am-6pm weekdays, in line with the special requirements of the job description. The successful candidate will be involved in establishing the working pattern for their week.  Consideration may be given to job-share or a combination of part-time posts to meet our extended offer.

Occasional weekend working is required for Open Days, Arrivals weekend and also Enabling Service Transition Days.

The starting salary for this post is £29,301, rising in annual increments to £36,001. Further benefits include the opportunity to join the University’s pension scheme, 30 days annual leave and access to a number of University employer discount schemes.
