As a Senior Research Fellow, you will:

• Lead a project to extract structured clinical findings from electronic health records (EHRs) using open-source large language models (LLMs) and harmonise findings to clinically relevant ontologies (in line with previously published research).
• Drive translational research integrating clinical and genomic data to advance personalised diagnostics for common autoimmune disease.
• Develop, implement and maintain robust, reproducible LLM-based pipelines, using modern workflow systems and high‑performance computing platforms.
• Produce rigorous, high‑quality research outputs that advance applied genomic diagnostics and build your growing research profile.
• Contribute to the design and delivery of education and training in genomic data science for academic and clinical audiences.
• Effectively manage early career researchers in the planning and delivery of project objectives.
• Collaborate with local and international multidisciplinary colleagues across genomics, clinical medicine, data science, statistics, software engineering and compute infrastructure to deliver impactful research and project objectives.

 The successful candidate will work at the interface of University Genomic Informatic Research, high-performance compute infrastructure (IRIDIS), NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, and the Southampton Emerging Therapies and Technologies (SETT) group.

You will bring:

• A PhD in health informatics, bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, data science, or a closely related field.
• Extensive experience integrating genomic data with structured clinical or phenotypic data, and familiarity with clinical ontologies such as HPO, SNOMED CT and ICD-10
• Extensive hands‑on experience with using open-source large language models, EHR data extraction, high‑throughput sequencing data analysis, and bioinformatics workflows used in research and/or diagnostic settings.
• Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, Perl, C/C++, Bash) and confidence working across Linux and other operating systems.
• Experience with ontology management software.
• Experience with data governance for handling sensitive EHR, genomic, and clinical data.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to collaborate effectively across disciplines and convey complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Proven ability to conduct research, work independently, and manage competing demands across projects.
• Proven ability to publish original research as a first author.

Our research brings together expertise in genomics, clinical medicine, bioinformatics and data science to identify genetic drivers of disease, discover diagnostic biomarkers and support more personalised approaches to treatment. By integrating large-scale genomic and clinical datasets, we aim to improve understanding of disease mechanisms and help clinicians make better-informed treatment decisions for individual patients.

The successful candidate will play a central role in coordinating research activities within the University of Southampton and with external partners including University Hospital Southampton and international collaborators.

The Role

You will:

• Provide programme management support across a complex portfolio of genomics and clinical research activities.
• Coordinate collaborations, meetings, project plans, milestones, reporting and governance activities.
• Monitor programme progress, budgets, risks and deliverables.
• Support research governance, ethics, data-sharing and compliance requirements.
• Maintain oversight of research data assets, documentation and operational processes.
• Act as a key point of contact for researchers, clinicians, funders and external partners.
• Support recruitment, onboarding and coordination of project staff and students.
• Assist with funding applications, renewals and funder reporting.
• Contribute to communication, dissemination and public engagement activities, including Patient and Public Involvement (PPI).

The appointed individual will work at the interface of University Genomic Informatic Research, high-performance compute infrastructure (IRIDIS), NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, and the Southampton Emerging Therapies and Technologies (SETT) group.

About You

You will have:

• An efficient, highly organised, detail-oriented approach coupled with an enthusiastic ‘can-do’ attitude
• Significant project or programme management experience within research, healthcare, higher education, life sciences, software development or another complex environment.
• A strong track record of delivering multiple projects to agreed deadlines and objectives.
• Experience of project planning, risk management, reporting and stakeholder coordination.
• Confident use of project management and collaboration software/tooling with strong spreadsheet and documentation skills.
• Experience managing budgets and preparing reports for programme boards, funders or senior stakeholders.
• Excellent interpersonal skills alongside excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work independently, prioritise competing demands and maintain momentum across multiple workstreams.
• Experience of working with sensitive information and an understanding of governance and data protection requirements.

A recognised project management qualification and experience working within scientific and healthcare environments would be advantageous.
