We are seeking a person with good skills in information science and good knowledge of, and/or demonstrable skills in conducting systematic reviews to join our team supporting national health policy decisions about the effective and cost-effective use of medicines and other healthcare technologies.

The Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) is a centre of excellence for health technology assessment (HTA), with expertise in finding, reviewing and synthesising clinical evidence and in the use of decision modelling and health economics to appraise benefits for patients and value for the National Health Service. We are one of nine Technology Assessment Review (TAR) teams contracted to provide independent and objective reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). We also have an active programme of other research, including cost-effectiveness analysis in the context of clinical trials, data analysis and modelling.

SHTAC is part of the Wessex Institute, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. The University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group, a top 20 UK university and one of the top 100 universities in the world. With a global reputation for academic excellence, we offer a stimulating, challenging and dynamic working environment for all our staff.

Working as part of the SHTAC evidence synthesis team on projects for NICE, you will: design and execute literature search strategies on bibliographic databases and other sources; critically appraise literature search strategies in evidence submissions to NICE; provide general information science support to the team (e.g. support and training on bibliographic software/databases and developments in information science); undertake systematic review tasks (e.g. screening references for inclusion; extract data and critically appraise evidence); write reports for NICE and contribute to the development of SHTAC’s programme of research in health (e.g. contributing to successful grant applications; writing peer reviewed publications).

You will have PhD in a relevant area (e.g. library studies and information science; health technology assessment), or equivalent specialist knowledge, skills and experience.

You will have experience in designing, testing, running and documenting systematic literature search strategies, and familiarity with searching major health and medical research databases such as Medline, and specialist topic databases.

You will have good knowledge of, and/or demonstrable skills in conducting systematic reviews (e.g. screening references, extracting data from studies).

Excellent IT knowledge/skills, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and bibliographic reference management software will be required.

In addition to technical knowledge and skills, you will be a good writer, work effectively in a team and communicate well.

You will be encouraged and supported to extend your knowledge and skills of relevant methods, to develop your own research interests, to publish high quality reports and papers and to present at local, national and international conferences and meetings. Funding for relevant training is available, and if needed we will support you in completing a part-time post-graduate course.

The appointment will be made on the salary scale £30,395 - £37,345 according to experience. Part time applicants will be considered.

Interviews will be held on the 09/07/2019.
