The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Research Councils UK Collective Fund is ‘one of the most ambitious international research programmes created; with £225 Million being invested across 37 interdisciplinary projects’ to address a range of world problems.  The University of Southampton’s project: ‘Building REsearch Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA) is proud to be part of this innovative research cohort. BRECcIA comprises 6 Universities located in 4 countries, and partnerships with 8 international organisations.

We have an exciting opportunity for experienced researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to join our team and to play a pivotal role in this ground-breaking project

The University of Southampton seeks an anthropologist or human geographer in the areas of environment, development, food and agriculture, natural resource use and sustainability for two years (renewable for up to one further year subject to the demands of the research project). You will be part of the BRECcIA project team (partners based inMalawi, Kenya, Ghana and the UK) with post-docs from different disciplinary backgrounds. 

You will have or will be close to completing, a PhD* (or have equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in anthropology. You will have both quantitative and qualitative skills (ethnographic fieldwork, interview techniques, sampling, surveys and questionnaires) to design and carry out field-based projects, to work closely with Southampton scientists and social scientists, to write research reports, and to liaise with African researchers and PhD students in areas ranging from Public Health to Hydrology. You will have field experience in rural areas, preferably in topics related to those outlined above. Previous experience in sub-Saharan Africa and knowledge of Swahili would be advantageous. You will be expected to travel internationally for the project.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
