Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (level 4/5)

Research positions on “ENgIneerinG MAterial properties with advanced laser direct writing — ENIGMA”

These positions are based at the Optoelectronic Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton and are funded by a research programme sponsored by the European Research Council. The posts are offered on a fixed-term basis until 31/12/2025.

About the Project:

ENIGMA aims to push the boundaries of ultrafast laser material processing, utilizing few-cycle laser pulses (FCLPs) to engineer materials with revolutionary optical and electronic properties. The project will delve into the fundamental and applied aspects of the intense interaction between ultra-short light pulses and matter. The goal is to synthesize unique material phases for advanced photonic devices and to pioneer developments in long-term high-density data storage, high-resolution microscopy, consumer electronics, and high-power laser applications.

Position Requirements:

We are seeking hands-on experimental scientists driven to tackle challenging scientific and technological problems. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to work in a high-calibre, dynamic research environment.

Desired Expertise:

Candidates should have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ultrafast laser material processing (desirable)
  • Femtosecond laser direct writing (essential)
  • Fundamentals of light-matter interactions (essential)
  • Nonlinear optics (essential)
  • Ultrafast optics, including few-cycle pulses (essential)
  • Micro- and nano-optics (desirable)
  • Optical engineering (desirable)

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Physics and Optical Engineering, along with a proven track record of innovative research at an international level. Experience in effective teamwork is also essential.

Applicants should demonstrate experience with ultrafast laser systems and possess a strong track record of independently setting up complex optical experiments.
