Research Fellow in Operational Research

At the School of Mathematical Sciences, the Operational Research group is seeking to appoint a full time Research Fellow for a fixed period of 6 months. There may be a possibility of extension depending on the quality of results achieved.

The Role

The position is a funded grant to Dr Bismark Singh by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, German Research Foundation. The selected candidate would conduct research at the interface of theory and application.

The project seeks to develop mathematical models for allocation of critical resources during pandemics. Populating these instances with real-world data we would then develop novel algorithms to solve them. The selected candidate would disseminate their research by publishing in top-tiered journals and presenting at international conferences. They would have an option of further collaborating with the grant holder’s collaborators in Germany and in the US.

The start date for this position is expected to be as soon as possible due to research and project deadlines.

Further information on the grant holder is available at: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/people/628nx8/doctor-bismark-singh. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Bismark Singh by email B.Singh@soton.ac.uk

About you

The selected candidate is required to have a PhD in operations research, mathematics, computer science or a related area. Experience in discrete optimization, demonstrated by at least one publication, is essential. Strong familiarity with stochastic optimization methodology, particularly sample average approximations and two-stage stochastic programming is required. Epidemiological knowledge of pandemics is not required but is helpful. Selected candidates will be interviewed.

What we can offer you

Through our Centre for Higher Educational Practice, we promote academic professional learning for every member of University staff.  We actively support educators to attain fellowship of the Higher Education Academy to demonstrate commitment to high quality teaching.

As a university we aim to create an inclusive environment and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We are proud to be a founding signatory of the Athena Swan gender equality charter, we hold both an institutional Silver award, and our School holds a silver award separately. We are committed to further improving gender equality and diversity in our school.

At the University of Southampton, PhD students and Research Fellows have access to a wide range of professional development and skills training for them to become the next generation of research leaders tackling critical projects for the future. We leverage these opportunities to maximize the impact of our research. The impact track record of the Operational Research group is exemplary, with more than 30 years of experience in impact activities whilst leveraging a research group with more than 120 industrial partners, including defense (DSTL, Boeing Defense UK), aerospace (ESA, Airbus, Rolls Royce), and infrastructure (Heathrow, BT, NHS). We are the largest operations research (OR) group in the country. Our QS ranking in 2021 was 7th in the UK, and 33rd world-wide for OR. 98% of all mathematical research in OR was rated internationally excellent or world-leading by the latest government research assessment exercise.

We offer fantastic benefits including 44 days leave per year on a full-time basis (inclusive of bank holidays and University closure days), excellent family leave arrangements (including maternity, paternity, adoption, parental and carers leave), a wide variety of on and off-campus arts and culture facilities and access to a range of staff discounts and offers at local shops, restaurants, and service providers. You will also have access to our sports complex, and to Hartley Library based on our Highfield Campus.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
