Research Fellow in Adaptive Estimation and Control

Cyber Physical Systems

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £34,980 to £42,978 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term for 18 months
Closing Date:  Tuesday 13 August 2024
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  2805924FP

You will join our collaborative team in the area of adaptive estimation as part of an EPSRC funded project. The research will look at developing adaptive estimation and control algorithms for systems containing uncertainties and nonlinearities which are not in the class of those typically considered by standard adaptive control and estimation algorithms. The research will look particularly at ways of combining adaptive estimation algorithms with approaches broadly from the robust control literature. An important part of the project is to develop algorithms which can be implemented in practice, for example on aircraft or certain classes of biological systems.

The successful applicant should have (or shortly be obtaining) a PhD in control systems engineering or a closely related field, ideally in adaptive control, robust control or similar. It is desirable you have experience in Lyapunov/passivity-based stability analysis and/or in observer design. It is essential that you demonstrate the ability to apply sound control theoretic techniques to complex technical problems.

You will be working closely with Dr Andrea Lecchini-Visintini  and Prof. Matthew Turner and at the University of Southampton, UK and also with other colleagues associated with the project.

The post will be full time for 18 months, with a starting date in October 2024. An additional 6-month extension is being sought and is under negotiation at the time of advertising this post.

Apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
