Research Technician

The silicon photonics team at the University of Southampton has a shared vision: we work together to turn silicon photonics research ideas into reality in order to bring the future closer for everyone.

If you are passionate about supporting cutting-edge research in a growing team of enthusiastic colleagues and have some experience of working as a Research Techician in a research or commercial environment, this role will suit you. You will join a group that has a culture centred around building a team and supporting one-another.

If you are self-motivated, able to manage your time efficiently, a good communicator, and an effective problem solver, and if you enjoy the flexibility of working both individually and as part of a team, you will fit in well..

You will have the opportunity to thrive in a university research environment where the culture is focused on people, collegiality, quality, internationalisation and sustainability. You will have the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of future technologies and you will be supported and trained to develop your career.

The silicon photonics team’s focus is developing photonics integrated circuits in collaboration with researchers and industry from across the globe. The team is based in the unique cleanroom facilities  - the Southampton Nanofabrication Cleanroom (SNC) and you will play a fundamental role in supporting colleagues who are undertaking cutting-edge research. Your working hours will be flexible, by agreement, working 37 hours per week on average within the cleanroom opening hours of 8AM – 6PM.

In the role of Research Technician, you will organise and manage the day-to-day operation of Characterisation Laboratories and several specialist tools housed within our world-class cleanroom facility including deposition, lithography and etching equipment. These tools are used to fabricate state-of-the-art Silicon Photonics devices for a range of research and enterprise projects. You will learn from experienced researchers and will gain valuable, transferable skills within the field of photonics device fabrication and testing. You will be provided with full training in addition to the opportunity to attend seminars and conferences to deepen your knowledge.

It is important that you already have some experience in a laboratory environment and that you have experience of successfully planning and progressing work activities. A degree in a science related subject or equivalent industry experience is required. Basic knowledge in Silicon Photonics device or integrated circuit fabrication is desirable but full training will be given.

We are an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation, or age.
