Senior Laboratory Technician

The Faculty of Medicine is seeking to recruit a Senior Technician to support research activities and regulatory compliance in its Containment Level 3 laboratories based at Southampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated technical team supporting world-class research activities, Full specialist training will be provided to support the successful candidate.

The Role

The successful candidate will work with the facility manager to support oversight and maintenance of the containment laboratories. With a keen focus on maintaining the high standards required to operate a facility of this type, the successful candidate will assist users to remain compliant with University Health and Safety policies as well as relevant legislation (SAPO, ACDP, Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) regulations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out regular maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, maintenance of records and liaising with external contractors. With excellent IT skills, the post holder will also play a key role in continuing the development of an electronic quality management system. 

The role offers opportunities to support occasional research support activities within the wider school, alongside both formal and in house training in the operation and management of a containment level 3 laboratory.

About you

You will have an HNC, HND, or A-Level, NVQ3 qualifications in relevant subjects, or proven work experience in relevant roles and job-related training. A degree in a relevant subject will be highly advantageous. You will have a minimum of one year’s experience working in containment level 2 laboratories and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of laboratory health and safety.

You will be a highly motivated individual, with prior experience using routine Microsoft Office software, experience using SharePoint will be highly advantageous.

With excellent communication skills, you will have the ability to facilitate communication between laboratory users, engineering contractors and the faculty technical leadership.
