Lecturer in Economics x 4

Lectureship in Economics

The University of Southampton's Department of Economics invites applications for up to 10 positions at the levels of Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor. This recruitment drive, part of a major expansion from 2024-2026, aims to further strengthen our vibrant research, education, and knowledge exchange culture

Our department is renowned for impactful research in the economics of migration, networks, education, crime, and inequality. We are also leaders in developing and applying cutting-edge macroeconomic, experimental, and econometric methods, including dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models and machine learning applications. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated 100% of our research environment and impact initiatives, and 93% of our research outputs as internationally excellent or above.

We have a strong record of securing prestigious grants from sources such as the ESRC, Horizon 2020, and Norface. Our department contributes to large-scale funding initiatives like the ESRC Centre for Population Change and ESRC Connecting Generations, both housed within the School of Economic, Social, and Political Sciences. The University of Southampton is ranked in the world’s top 100 and is among the UK’s top 15 research-intensive institutions.

We seek economists to enhance and complement our existing research areas or to build new clusters of excellence in nationally and globally important fields.

At the University of Southampton, we are building on our world-leading success by championing four themed areas to address the most complex societal and environmental challenges: AI and Data Science; Sustainability and Resilience; Decarbonisation; and Engineering Better Health. Candidates who share our commitment to conducting cutting-edge research, actively contributing to our academic community, and upholding our values of fostering a supportive and inclusive research and educational environment are encouraged to apply.

All candidates should have a growing or established reputation in the field of Economics, demonstrated by publications in leading academic journals and research with significant academic and societal impact. They should demonstrate evidence of writing grant proposals and/or the ability to develop a plan for seeking funding. Candidates for the Professor position should demonstrate leadership and a strong reputation in their sub-field. Newly appointed colleagues will also contribute to the Department’s educational mission by designing, delivering and engaging in innovative, research-led teaching.

The School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion and renewed its Athena SWAN Bronze award in February 2024, demonstrating this commitment. We strongly encourage applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and those from less educationally advantaged backgrounds).

As part of our commitment to supporting our research community, we are open to flexible working. We consider applicants wishing to work flexibly, including part-time and those who have taken a career break. We are also proud to have recently been awarded the Race Equality Charter Bronze award, commended for our commitment to improving race equality across the University community.

Successful candidates will be expected to start in January/February 2025, although a later start date may be negotiable.
