Research Fellow STFC

The String Theory and Holography Group in the School of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for one postdoctoral fellowship to work on our broad research programme in quantum field theory and string theory and gravity. The position is funded by the Science and Technology Funding Council (STFC) and we will make an appointment in any areas of research across our programme, including for example research in all aspects of holographic dualities, conformal field theory, black holes, amplitudes and related topics. This is a one-year position with start date in October 2025, however, we expect to receive additional funding before the end of the of the first year and we will then consider extending this position for up to two additional years.

Academic context

Successful applicants will join the String Theory and Holography Group within Mathematical Sciences and the Southampton Theory, Astronomy and Gravitation (STAG) research centre, which bridges the Schools of Mathematical Sciences and Physics. The STAG Research Centre provides a stimulating and collegial environment for research collaborations, and you will be encouraged and enabled to collaborate with our groups in theoretical particle physics and string theory. Members include Dr Ines Aniceto, Prof. Oscar Dias, Dr Fridrik Gautason, Dr Felix Haehl, Dr Carlos Mafra, Dr Andreas Schmitt, Prof. Kostas Skenderis, Dr David Turton, Dr Ben Withers, Dr Itamar Yaakov and Dr Ida Zadeh in Mathematical Sciences, as well as Prof. James Drummond, Prof. Nick Evans, and Dr Omer Gurdogan in Physics and Astronomy. Furthermore, the Gravity Group in Mathematical Sciences works closely with the String Theory and Holography Group and studies gravitational waves, neutron stars and black holes.

Applicants' profile

The successful applicant will have a strong track record of research in the topics outlined above and they will contribute to the development of the research group.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

EDI and working environment
