Research Funding Development (RFD) – Research and Innovation Services (RIS)

Take your place at the heart of our research strategy. The University of Southampton is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Funding Manager to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in supporting our researchers in securing funding from the Horizon Europe programmes. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in research funding development, particularly in leading EU consortium bids. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Research Funding Development: Provide expert advice on Horizon Europe programme and project management for the development and submission of strategically important large projects. 
  • Consortium Building: Support academic colleagues in leading and managing research consortia, ensuring effective collaboration between internal and external stakeholders and successful submission. 
  • Strategy Implementation: Develop and implement sustainable funder-specific strategies to grow research income and improve overall performance. 
  • EU Funding Access: Enhance the University's ability to access EU research funding and influence future calls and priorities. 
  • Training and Workshops: Lead and facilitate workshops to develop bidding capacity for Horizon Europe. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with senior academic staff, applicants, finance and contracts team, National Contact Points, UKRO, and other key stakeholders. 
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and support colleagues within the EU funding team, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. 
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Head of Research Funding Development and other Research Funding Managers to ensure an efficient and collaborative working culture. 

Essential Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Professional qualification or postgraduate degree, or significant relevant experience at a senior level. 
  • Extensive experience in research funding development, particularly within the Horizon Europe programme. 
  • Proven track record in leading EU funding bids, in particular consortium bids and managing collaborative research projects. 
  • In-depth knowledge of the national and international research funding landscape. 
  • Strong people management skills and the ability to initiate, plan, and manage major new projects. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to persuade and influence to foster excellent relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
