Research Fellow: Fisher Information in Nanophotonics

We are seeking an outstanding, creative researcher with the skills to explore the physics of light-matter interactions at (sub)nanoscale and their applications to optical metrology, from the perspective of the generation and propagation of (Fisher) information.

You will join a major Programme sponsored by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - becoming a member of a broader interdisciplinary research team with interests ranging from photonic metamaterials and toroidal electrodynamics to super-resolution imaging and optical nano-metrology - see www.nanophotonics.org.uk/niz/.

You will hold (or be nearing completion of) a PhD* or equivalent qualification/experience in Physics or another subject relevant to the field of optics/nanophotonics, with substantial and authoritative knowledge and experience in the field of information theory applied to nanophotonics. Well organised and driven, you will demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills, and strong powers of communication, alongside a collaborative approach. Prior experience in computational electromagnetics modelling, the application of machine learning algorithms, and development of precise optical experiments including instrumentation for complex light field generation will be advantageous.

As well as a world-class research environment, we offer benefits including a generous holiday allowance, access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities, and the possibility of flexible working hours.

As a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN charter, and holder of a silver award, the University is committed to improving equality. We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive, and we are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
