Research Fellow in Ship Efficiency and Zero-Carbon Shipping

The University of Southampton is committed to excellence in all we do, applying our insights and inventiveness to solve complex engineering and environmental challenges. As a world-leading, research-intensive university with a strong educational offering, we are renowned for our innovation, enterprise, and global impact.

The Maritime Engineering Research Group is internationally recognised for its research in ship hydrodynamics, design optimisation, and marine decarbonisation. Our work combines advanced simulation, AI, and experimental methods to support a more sustainable maritime future.

The Role and About You:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join our recently funded project, supported by Innovate UK through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (Round 6). This interdisciplinary project brings together leading industrial and academic partners to revolutionise ship design by integrating generative AI, simulation, and advanced manufacturing.

In this role, you will contribute to the development of intelligent design workflows using CFD and data-driven methods to assess and optimise next-generation vessel designs. You will collaborate closely with project partners, applying state-of-the-art tools to create manufacturable and high-performance ship forms.

We are looking for candidates with a background in maritime engineering, marine CFD, hydrodynamics, or related areas. Experience or interest in marine CFD would be advantageous.

What We Can Offer You:

You will join a dynamic and supportive research environment at the University of Southampton, with access to world-class facilities including our 138m Boldrewood Towing Tank and Iridis research computing facility. You will receive mentoring and technical guidance from the project’s academic leads, Dr. Tahsin Tezdogan and Dr. Nicholas Townsend, and gain exposure to a national network of academic and industry experts shaping the future of smart shipping and maritime decarbonisation.

As a university, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that fosters respect, equality, and opportunity for all. We value the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of our staff and believe they enhance our ability to innovate and excel.

For informal enquiries about the post, please contact Dr. Tahsin Tezdogan (t.tezdogan@soton.ac.uk).
