Research Fellow

This is an exciting time to join the University of Southampton, a global top-100 university with a reputation for delivering world-class education and research that addresses some of society’s biggest challenges.

We are seeking a Research Fellow in Liquid Metal Artificial Enzymes to join the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary research programme focused on the design, synthesis, and characterisation of liquid metal nanomaterials as catalytic artificial enzymes for biomedical and bioengineering applications.

The role will involve developing gallium-based liquid metal nanostructures and catalytic systems, investigating their physicochemical properties, catalytic mechanisms, and interactions with biological environments. The postholder will design and conduct experiments to evaluate catalytic activity, stability, and functionality in biologically relevant conditions.

You will contribute to experimental design, data analysis, and the preparation of research publications, while working collaboratively with researchers across materials science, nanotechnology, and bioengineering.

The successful candidate will also contribute to mentoring postgraduate researchers, supporting collaborative research projects, and assisting with the preparation of future research funding proposals.

About You

You will hold a PhD in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a closely related discipline (or have equivalent professional experience), with a strong background in experimental research.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Nanomaterials synthesis and characterisation
  • Liquid metal materials or gallium-based nanomaterials
  • Artificial enzymes or nanozymes
  • Catalysis at biointerfaces or reactive nanomaterials
  • Advanced materials characterisation techniques (e.g., electron microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis)

You will be motivated to work in a multidisciplinary research environment, collaborating with researchers across engineering, materials science, and biomedical fields. Strong organisational skills, scientific curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively will be essential for success in the role.

What We Can Offer You

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Generous annual leave plus 6 University closure days and bank holidays
  • University pension scheme
  • Discounted private healthcare and dental cover
  • Company sick pay
  • Flexible working options
  • Excellent family leave arrangements

You will also benefit from access to the University’s excellent research facilities, training and development opportunities, and a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.
