The Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), based at Southampton General Hospital, manages a growing portfolio of multi-centre clinical trials that have the potential to directly influence routine clinical practice and improve patient outcomes across a range of disease areas.
Due to new grant awards, we have a vacancy for a Trial Manager to join our established Non-Cancer Trials team to develop and manage one or more studies within a diverse and expanding portfolio. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with previous clinical trials experience to join a CTU which has full registration status from the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC).
The successful applicant will have experience of working in clinical trials within the NHS, academic or commercial health research sector. They will contribute to the delivery of complex intervention studies conducted across a range of healthcare settings, including community, primary care, hospice and home-based environments. The portfolio includes research involving adults with significant health and care needs, including potentially vulnerable populations, where trial delivery must be integrated into routine clinical care pathways.
The role requires excellent organisational and communication skills and the ability to work effectively within complex stakeholder environments, collaborating with clinicians, community healthcare teams, hospices, primary care providers, research networks, patient representatives and external partners. Experience of coordinating multi-centre studies, managing competing priorities, supporting site set-up and oversight, and navigating operational challenges associated with pragmatic trial delivery would be advantageous.
The successful applicant will have a good understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), clinical trial regulations and risk-based approaches to trial management. They will support studies addressing important healthcare challenges, including the evaluation of interventions delivered in community and home-based settings and research conducted within palliative and end-of-life care pathways. A flexible and participant-centred approach will be essential, together with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of participant safety, data quality and trial governance.
The employing organisation is the University of Southampton, which offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and a wide range of staff benefits. The post is offered on a one-year fixed-term contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.
The CTU is part of a strong research environment in Southampton which includes the Cancer Research UK Clinical Centre, Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility and strong NHS R&D Management.
