Salary:

Associate Professor: £47,801 per annum rising in annual increments to £60,081

Lecturer: £36,672 per annum rising in annual increments to £46,414

The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton is seeking outstanding candidates to fill an open position in the area of Additive Manufacturing/Multifunctional Materials/3D printing.

The successful applicant will join the Engineering Materials group in the Faculty but is expected to work across discipline boundaries in the Faculty & University. The objective is to strengthen our capabilities in the field of innovative materials development based on 3D printing technologies. This fast-growing manufacturing technology opens up new and unexplored territories in materials system development for many applications e.g. multifunctional materials, self-healing materials, batteries, tissue scaffolds and bone. The Faculty already has significant expertise in many of these application areas and the full exploitation and application of new facilities in 3D printing is a focus for this appointment. We are looking for someone with strong materials science expertise to develop and extend our capabilities in this area – expertise in polymers and/or metallic 3D printing processes would be welcomed (but other profiles are also of interest). The successful applicant will have a strong track record of publications and research funding and will see the move to Southampton as a way to grow his/her career in a strong academic environment. The quality of the individual is more important than their particular research speciality, although we are looking for synergy with existing activities.

Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field and have a developing international reputation for research excellence. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program as well as contribute fully to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across the faculty. Salary and level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

You will join one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering and environmental research and education rated number one for research power in REF2014.  We have an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. The Faculty has nearly 200 academic staff working in a number of research themes (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/themes.page). We have exceptional research facilities particularly in our state-of-the-art facilities at our new Boldrewood Innovation Campus (fluids and structures/infrastructure).
