HyperStore: Singlet States and Supercritical Fluids for Storage and Transport of Hyperpolarised Spin Order

Applications are invited for a Researcher in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the research group of Dr Giuseppe Pileio, in collaboration with Prof Malcolm H Levitt. The project, funded by EPSRC, concerns the development of NMR hardware and methodology that combines supercritical fluids with long-lived states NMR and dissolution-DNP to prolong the storage of hyperpolarised spin order and allow it to be transported remotely from the production site.

The research involves the design and assembly of hardware including low-field NMR, supercritical-CO2chromatography (this development is done in collaboration with Jasco – a UK-based company leader in this industrial sector), high-pressure systems, automation and control systems. It also requires involvement in the development of NMR methodology and experiments. The research fellow will help to develop new research ideas and applications exploiting singlet magnetic resonance and dissolution-DNP.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional  qualifications and experiencein either Physics or Engineering or any related field and have experience in the design, construction and operation of scientific instrumentation (in particular electrical circuits and working with radiofrequencies). Knowledge of spin physics and/or basics of NMR woudl be advantageous. You will have an excellent work ethic and commitment to achieve the project aims, be open-minded to collaboration with the other scientists of the project consortium, and be confident and able to regularly present research results at consortium meetings. You will be involved in general running of the laboratory including supervision of undergraduate project students as required, and expected to adhere to our strict safety standards.   

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You will be part of the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well equipped NMR facility including three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. A custom-made state-of-art dissolution DNP polariser is also available together with custom-made hardware for the production of para-hydrogen gas. The section offers a huge and complimentary expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, protein NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures.
