Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of Hyperpolarized Spin Systems

Applications are invited for a Research Fellowship in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the research group of Prof Malcolm H Levitt. The project, funded by EPSRC, involves the use of dissolution-DNP (dynamic nuclear polarization) and QRIP (quantum-rotor-induced polarization) phenomena to prepare systems in long-lived hyperpolarized spin states. We are investigating the methodology for preparing such states and developing techniques for applications in chemistry and biochemistry.

Our laboratory has constructed and tested home-built equipment for dissolution-DNP, which generates solutions of substances with highly polarized nuclear spins, providing NMR signals enhanced by several orders of magnitude. Our group has also demonstrated molecular systems capable of supporting very long-lived nuclear spin states (lifetime of more than 1 hour in room-temperature solution). The primary task of the project is now to combine these two phenomena. We have access to engineering and chemical expertise, and suitable isotopically labelled compounds.

The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field. Experience with hyperpolarized NMR, especially dissolution DNP, is desirable. Knowledge of the principles of NMR and quantum mechanics, and experience with advanced solution-state NMR techniques, is desirable. The candidate must also be prepared to spend a small fraction of the time helping supervise student research.

The successful candidate will be part of the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well-equipped NMR facility including three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The project will involve a custom-made dissolution DNP polariser which is now operational. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, protein NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.
