Parahydrogen-Enhanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Fixed term appointment up to 24 months

Applications are invited for a Researcher in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the research group of Prof Malcolm H Levitt. The project, funded by EPSRC and the Royal Society, involves the use of parahydrogen to generate hyperpolarized materials, for applications in chemistry, biology and medicine. The project is based on some new methodological concepts which we expect to give rise to novel experimental possibilities.

The project will require a creative approach to magnetic resonance experiments, and will involve the design and construction of home-built apparatus at low magnetic fields. We will be using this apparatus together with a desktop NMR spectrometer as well as our suite of high-field NMR spectrometers. There is much scope to interact with other activities in the magnetic resonance section in Southampton, including hyperpolarized NMR, solid-state NMR and cryogenic NMR.  The project will appeal to an imaginative and adventurous scientist looking for an outlet for his or her creativity on the frontiers of magnetic resonance, with the chance of being at the forefront of new scientific possibilities. We have access to engineering and chemical expertise, and isotopically labelled compounds.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field and experience of advanced NMR techniques, and in the design or construction of scientific instrumentation. Experience of hyperpolarized NMR, especially parahydrogen-induced hyperpolarizationand knowledge of the principles of NMR and quantum mechanics, and experience with advanced solution-state NMR techniques would be advantageous. You must also be prepared to spend a small fraction of your time helping supervise student research.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The successful candidate will be part of the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well-equipped NMR facility including three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The project will primarily involve a desktop NMR spectrometer. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, biomolecular NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.

Informal enquiries should be made to Prof Malcolm H Levitt (, University of Southampton.
