The Centre for Geometry, Topology, and Applications at the University of Southampton (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/cgta) invites applications for a full time three-year Research Fellow position in topological data analysis for the study and design of nanomaterials. This position is ideally suited for mathematicians, physicists, or computer scientists who are interested in applications of mathematics, especially topology, to challenging problems in the physical sciences. This project offers an exciting opportunity for an enterprising candidate to join a truly multidisciplinary project, sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust, which will be carried out by a team of mathematicians, experimental physicists, and nanofabrication experts. The goal of the project is to design new methodology to classify and quantify the topological structure of nanomaterials in relation to their physical performance.

The successful candidate must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Physics as well as a strong interest and a track record in topological data analysis supported by substantial programming skills. It is desirable for the candidate to be familiar with spectral graph theory and its applications to synchronisation problems. The candidate should be interested in applications of topology to physics or materials science, but detailed knowledge of those subjects is not required. We offer an exciting research environment where you will work with doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, as well as senior academics from CGTA, School of Mathematical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy at Southampton. There will be an opportunity to guide PhD and Master Students.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
