Research Fellow position in Oligocene climate variability - University of Southampton, School of Ocean and Earth Sciences (SOES)

The post holder will undertake scientific research on Oligocene climate variability using lipid biomarkers as part of the NERC-funded project entitled ‘Solving the Oligocene Icehouse Conundrum” (https://tinyurl.com/oligocenegrant) awarded to Prof Bridget Wade (University College London), Dr Gordon Inglis (University of Southampton), Dr James Rae (St. Andrews) and Dr. Fanny Monteiro (University of Bristol). The overall project will use a combination of micropalaeontology, multi-proxy geochemical data, and state-of-the-art Earth System models, to reconstruct and understand the relationships between atmospheric carbon dioxide, sea level, temperature, oceanic carbon cycle, and ice sheet dynamics during the Oligocene epoch (34 to 23 million years ago). This will address the fundamental disconnect found at present between CO2, temperature and ice volume during the Oligocene.

This is a 3 year full time post (36 months) and the researcher will work on three main tasks: (i) generate new sea surface temperature records during the Oligocene using lipid biomarker proxies (e.g., TEX86, UK37) to reconstruct sea surface temperature gradients, (ii) develop new COrecords during the Oligocene using the alkenone CO2-proxy, and (iii) identify and quantify phytoplankton biomarkers to determine the strength of the biological pump during the Oligocene.

The project requires someone with skills and experience in the using lipid biomarkers for reconstructing climate, ideally in marine sediments. The post holder will work with both Dr Gordon Inglis (School of Ocean and Earth Sciences - SOES) and Prof Gavin Foster (SOES) and will benefit from the early career support opportunities available across the University. They will also be part of the wider team led by Prof Bridget Wade (UCL), and will work closely with the other research fellows and investigators on the project from a range of UK and overseas institutions.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
