We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate how humans reconstruct the 3D layout of natural scenes from a single 2D image.

This full time, fixed term 36-month post is a critical component of the ROSSINI project (Reconstructing 3D Structure from Single Images). This EPSRC-funded project brings together human and machine vision in a collaboration between the Universities of Southampton, Surrey and Aston (UK) and York (Canada). The overarching aim of the project is to develop a machine vision system that recovers human-like representations of complex natural scenes.

The successful candidate will be based in Professor Wendy Adams' lab at the University of Southampton, and will use human behavioural studies alongside analyses of natural scenes (e.g. the Southampton-York Natural Scenes dataset: to understand and model human visual perception. By working in close collaboration with Professor Bowden (Surrey), Dr. Schofield (Aston) and Professor Elder (York) we will embed human-like visual processing into a machine vision solution for 3D uplift, i.e. producing a 3D scene representation from a single image.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in human vision, with strong computational skills and experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++). Expertise in image analysis is not an essential requirement of this post, however an interest in computer vision would be an advantage.

Psychology at the University of Southampton encompasses a large and diverse group of excellent researchers, and includes the Centre for Vision and Cognition. Whilst Psychology is ambitious and successful, it is also a very friendly and pleasant place to work.  You will join a highly motivated and professional team with many opportunities for professional development.
