Research Fellow - Hollow core optical fibre interconnection and devices

Fibre & Systems Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £30,395 to £37,345 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term (for 2 years)
Closing Date:  Wednesday 24 July 2019
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  1117019PN-R

You will join our team working in the field of hollow core optical fibre amplifiers to work on the development of techniques to integrate these radically new fibres into conventional (solid fibre) fibre systems and to connect them to other photonics devices (e.g. semiconductor lasers and silicon photonic devices). The research looks to exploit the world leading advances that we are making in this new fibre technology and to transform it into a readily deployable technology for use in a variety of systems applications in telecommunications, lasers and sensors.

This research project is a component part of the £6.1M Airguide Photonics Programme Grant funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and will involve collaboration with a wide range of researchers at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and external academic and industrial partners. You will be joining a large and successful team within our world-leading photonics research centre at the University of Southampton, UK and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in photonics with extensive practical experience of working with optical fibre, particularly with respect to handling, cleaving, splicing and free space beam coupling. Ideally you will also have experience in modelling and characterising the modal properties of optical fibres as well as in characterising photonic components. A working knowledge of optical communication systems, and/or lasers, and/or optical sensor systems would be advantageous.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
