Research Fellow in Optical Fibre Fabrication to Develop Wideband Amplifiers

Applications are invited from talented researchers with a strong interest in fibre optics, photonics materials and devices to work on an industrial funded programme to develop active optical fibres for wideband amplifiers for use in telecommunications. The project will involve fabrication of optical fibres incorporating rare earths and other active dopants, and to investigate their performance in wideband optical amplifiers.

The successful applicant will need to have a strong background in developing novel optical fibres and proving their successful operation in photonic device demonstrations. A PhD* or equivalent qualification in the field of materials science, chemistry, physics, or engineering with relevant experience at post-graduate/post-doctoral level in fibre technology is essential. Experience with fibre fabrication and fibre amplifiers and lasers would be highly beneficial for this position. The ability to work as part of a cohesive team and to collaborate widely is essential.

The initial appointment will be for 2 years with potential for further extensions. 

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
