The Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) Research Group at the University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher specialized in computational fluid dynamics. The AFM group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to hypersonics. 

You will be part of Dr. Ralf Deiterding's team working on the Cartesian parallel adaptive AMROC fluid solver framework and concentrate on using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to carry out massively parallel large eddy and direct numerical simulations of turbulent boundary layer flows over rough, porous and compliant surfaces. You will compare your results directly to corresponding experimental data obtained by another postdoctoral researcher in the same funded project. At a later stage, acoustic signals will be gathered from your high-resolution computations and compared to experimental flow noise measurements. Simulations will be run on the University of Southampton’s supercomputer Iridis 5 as well as on the national supercomputing facility ARCHER.

It is essential that you have completed a PhD with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics of high Reynolds number flows. A strong programming background in C++ and Fortran as well as parallel high-performance computing experience in a Linux environment are expected. Previous experience with lattice Boltzmann methods and/or multiscale modelling of porous media flows will be valued highly but are not mandatory. A publication record in computational fluid dynamics, specifically, large eddy simulation or direct numerical simulation with the LBM is desirable. 

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

There will also be opportunities to collaborate with graduate students working on advanced developments related to lattice Boltzmann schemes and to supervise undergraduate students on topics of applied computational fluid dynamics.
