Full Time Fixed Term (until 30/12/2021)
Closing Date:  Sunday 19 May 2019

A post is available for a researcher of outstanding calibre to work on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)-funded TRANSCEND project, based at the University’s Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton), examining the development of nuclear site decommissioning technologies.

TRANSCEND (Transformative Science and Engineering for Nuclear Decommissioning) is a multi-partner UK project focused on the safe management and disposal of civil nuclear waste. This post builds on emerging sustainable remediation ideas and previous proof-of-concept work to develop novel ex-situ and in-situ low-energy electrokinetic based remediation, stabilisation or clean-up approaches for complex site materials at working (and legacy) nuclear sites.

The post will involve the establishment and testing of electrokinetic (EK) test cells at different scales on simulated nuclear site materials, targeting clean-up or stabilisation of problem wastes and contaminants. These test cells, and numerical and physicochemical modelling of EK processes, will inform full-scale on-site application by nuclear site holders. You should have or be about to complete a PhD* (or equivalent) in contaminated land remediation, geochemistry, or a relevant area of geology, environmental science, environmental engineering, physics, chemistry or civil engineering, together with excellent experimental and analysis skills. Experience in numerical or physicochemical modelling would also be beneficial.

The successful candidate will have full access to top class characterisation and testing facilities in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and GAU-Radioanalytical ( and will be integrated fully into the School and the wider TRANSCEND academic and industry consortium, which offers opportunities for further researcher training and secondments with a number of industrial and other partners.
